Υποστηρίζουμε την προσφυγή στο Συμβούλιο της Επικρατείας που έγινε τον Μάϊο του 2016 από κατοίκους της Κρήτης καθώς και περιβαλλοντικές, αρχαιολογικές και άλλες οργανώσεις, για να σωθεί το μοναδικό αρχαιολογικό και φυσικό τοπίο του Κάβο Σίδερο στην Ανατολική Κρήτη (http://oikokriti.blogspot.co.uk/2016/05/blog-post.html)
Το προτεινόμενο θέρετρο γκολφ πρόκειται να επηρεάσει μια περιοχή που έχει χαρακτηριστεί ως περιοχή NATURA 2000 δύο φορές, και που έχει ανάγκη ειδικής προστασίας. Επίσης, έχει χαρακτηριστεί σαν Γεωπάρκο της UNESCO. Επιπλέον, όπως έχουν δείξει λεπτομερείς και σε βάθος αρχαιολογικές και περιβαλλοντικές μελέτες (έρευνα μεταξύ 1995 και 2005 από το Πανεπιστήμιο του Παρισιού Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne σε συνεργασία με την 24η Εφορεία Προϊστορικών και Κλασικών Αρχαιοτήτωνhttp://webefa.efa.gr/prospection-itanos/ και έρευνες της Jennifer Moody και του εκλιπόντος Oliver Rackham 2006-7), η υπό ανάπτυξη περιοχή είναι ένα εξαιρετικά πλούσιο αρχαιολογικό τοπίο με δεκάδες θέσεις ειδικού ενδιαφέροντος που σπάνια επιβιώνουν σε άλλα μέρη της Κρήτης. Έχει χαρακτηριστεί από το Παγκόσμιο Αρχαιολογικό Κογκρέσο σαν μια ‘κάψουλα χρόνου’, λόγω αυτής της μοναδικής διατήρησης. Είναι, επίσης, πλούσια σε σπάνια και ενδημικά φυτά, και είναι μια περιοχή ειδικού ενδιαφέροντος για πολλά είδη ζώων. Ένα θέρετρο γκολφ σε μια από τις πιο ξηρές περιοχές της Μεσογείου και σε ένα τοπίο τέτοιας σημασίας δεν έχει κανένα περιβαλλοντικό, πολιτισμικό ή και ακόμα οικονομικό νόημα, και θα έχει τεράστια αρνητική επίδραση στη μελλοντική ανάπτυξη της περιοχής. Προτρέπουμε εσάς και την κυβέρνησή σας να σκεφτείτε ξανά την απόφαση αυτή.
Σημειώνουμε επίσης ότι οι εξειδικευμένοι υπάλληλοι του κράτους όπως οι αρχαιολόγοι (μέσω του Σωματείου Ελλήνων Αρχαιολόγων - ΣΕΑ: http://www.sea.org.gr/details.php?id=520 και οι μηχανικοί του δημοσίου (http://www.emdydas.gr/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1823:2016-06-06-10-12-51&catid=1:news-po-emdydas&Itemid=23 είναι εναντίον αυτής της επένδυσης. We support the court appeal launched in May 2016 by citizens of Crete and environmental, archaeological, and other organisations, to save the unique archaeological and natural landscape of Kavo Sidero in East Crete (http://oikokriti.blogspot.co.uk/2016/05/blog-post.html). The proposed golf resort development is going to affect an area which has been designated by the European Union a NATURA area twice, and in need of special protection. It has been also declared a UNESCO Geopark. Moreover, as detailed and thorough archaeological and archaeo-environmental studies have shown (archaeological survey carried out by the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne in collaboration with the XXIVth Ephoria of Prehistorical and Classical Antiquitieshttp://webefa.efa.gr/prospection-itanos/ from 1995-2005; researches by Jennifer Moody and the late Oliver Rackham 2006-7), the area under development is an extremely rich archaeological landscape with dozens of sites of special interest which rarely survive in other parts of the island or Greece. It has been characterised by the World Archaeological Congress (WAC), a "time capsule", due to such unique preservation. It is also rich in rare and endemic plants, and it is an area of special interest for many species of animals. A golf resort development in one of the most arid regions of the Mediterranean and in a landscape of such importance makes no environmental, cultural, or even economic sense, and will have a huge negative impact on the future development of the region. We urge you and your government to rethink your decision. We note also that your own specialist civil servants such as the archaeologists (through the Association of Greek Archaeologists -SEA:http://www.sea.org.gr/details.php?id=520 and the state civil engineers (http://www.emdydas.gr/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1823:2016-06-06-10-12-51&catid=1:news-po-emdydas&Itemid=23) are against this development. Please listen to them and help save this unique landscape.
